Welcome to the accessible.travel Community

Thanks for joining us here at the accessible.travel Community for people with disabilities and mature travellers. This community is for designed for people that love city breaks and want to share information, ideas and tips with fellow travellers that have similar issues.

The acccessible.travel Community is an attempt to even the playing field a little and give people with disabilities and mature travellers information regarding accessible city breaks. Users can post reviews about accessible city accommodation, attractions, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, transport, whatever you want really! This isn’t going to happen overnight, but with time, the accessible.travel Community aims to be a useful resource to people with disabilities and mature travellers that, like me, love travelling to different cities around the world.

Please fill in your profile including a photo if possible, if we also know where you've been and where you'd like to go it helps the rest of the community help you. You can add photos and videos of your city breaks too.

Feel free to join any of the city destination groups or if you've visited a city that doesn't yet have a group, simply start your own. If you decide to create your own group, in order to keep the community focused on city breaks, it will first have to be approved by admin so please be a little patient. You can also email me ideas for groups or suggest them in the forum.

You can have a look at the Barcelona group for ideas about discussions.

The forum is also available for other questions and don't forget to chat with other members in the chat room!

accessible.travel Community News

New accessible.travel Destinations: Cape Town and Melbourne.

With the amazing help of Monica Guy here on the accessible.travel Community and the owner of Accessible Cape Town, we have been able to launch the accessible.travel Cape Town destination page. There's still a lot of work for us to do in South Africa and a lot of information to collect, but now we have four hotels for you to choose from with varying levels of facilities for people with disabilities.

Below: accessible.travel Community member Scott Rains on Safari in South Africa earlier this month.

Another member of the accessible.travel Community, Bill Forrester, has been collecting hotel data and information with us in Melbourne and all of this has just been sent to the accessible.travel designer and has now been published. Brussels will also be launched as a destination accessible.travel early next week with another 5 hotels to choose from.

Ian Chill has also been sending us some great information about accessible hotels in Cairns as well as posting information in the accessible.travel Community Cairns Group. I'll announce when Cairns is available with instant hotel booking here on the blog as soon as it's ready. Another collaborator with the accessible.travel project is Hartmut Smikac and will be helping us collect information in Germany, Austria and Hungary. Again in Europe, Luis Varela from Accessible Portugal has agreed to work with us, this time in Portuguese capital, Lisbon. Luis is the latest person to agree to work with us and I'm really looking forward to working with him further.

Hartmut has also translated our audit forms into German and Loretta Jaumandreu has translated them into Spanish making it easier for us to work with local people with disabilities at destinations that speak these languages.

If you would like to get more involved with the accessible.travel project and help us collect information about hotels, attractions, museums, bars, restaurants, nightclubs and transport where you live and earn commissions for the work you do, please contact me through my profile.

Tour Watch

Visit Tour Watch

accessible.travel Community's sister page is Tour Watch which was created by Scott Rains in early 2008. Tour Watch is a community for profesionals with an interest in inclusive tourism for people with disabilities .

"From the perspective of slow walkers and those with disabilities Tour Watch presents best practices and opportunities for improved service in the tour operator and leisure education industry."

The main difference between the two communities is that the accessible.travel Community is aimed at individual people with disabilities to help them help each other travel and Tour Watch is for professionals to exchange ideas and create new travel products.

Power Washing Myself!

We bought a new power wash machine on late night television. It arrived and I couldn't wait to set it up, only I couldn't. My wife did, all the while asking if I really intended to use it myself? "Of course I'm going to use it. I'm going to power wash the house!"
It is at times like this that I forget about my limitations and believe that I'm still capable of washing my house. Doesn't everyone wash their house? I mean come on...how difficult can it be?
Wrong.
But it wasn't until the nozzle slipp… Continue
